Vocal Music of Maihar Experience

Dhrupad • Dhammar • Khyaal • Bhakti

Vocal Music of Maihar is an immersive concert program presenting the rare and powerful vocal tradition of the Rampur–Maihar Senia Gharana — a lineage tracing back through Ustad Allauddin Khan to the musical legacy of Mian Tansen and the great Naad Yogi Swami Haridas. While the Maihar Gharana is widely celebrated for its instrumental masters — towering figures such as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, and Smt. Annapurna Devi — its roots are fundamentally vocal — every instrumentalist of this lineage was trained first in Senia Dhrupad. Gaayatri stands as one of the few living pure vocalists of this tradition, bringing forward styles and compositions that carry deep spiritual roots while resonating with contemporary listeners. Her artistry reflects the defining Senia aesthetic — an uncompromising emphasis on rāga purity, tonal precision, and resonance, where music unfolds as a contemplative and devotional practice rather than a display of virtuosity. Every note is an act of sādhanā, every rāga a tool for spiritual awakening. In this program, Gaayatri guides audiences into a meditative journey through the living heart of her lineage — Dhrupad, Dhammar, Khyaal, and Bhakti music passed down through generations, each form shaped by the ancient discipline of Naad Yoga and the understanding that sound itself is a path to the divine.

Into the Raaga - A Rare Maihar Dhrupad Experience

There are few musical experiences as rare as Maihar Dhrupad. The vocal roots of the Rampur–Maihar Senia Gharana — one of the most influential lineages in the history of Indian classical music — have all but disappeared, leaving behind a tradition on the edge of living memory. Gaayatri stands as the last vocalist trained directly in this style by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, in an unbroken line of transmission tracing back through Ustad Allauddin Khan to Mian Tansen and the great Naad Yogi Swami Haridas. In this immersive program, she brings that tradition to life — presenting Dhrupad not as a historical artifact, but as a living, breathing act of devotion, where rāga unfolds with the stillness, purity, and transformative resonance that has defined the Senia aesthetic for centuries.

Into the Raaga - A Rare Maihar Khyaal Experience

Raaga Exploration is a rare and intimate encounter with one of the least heard voices in Hindustani classical music — Maihar Khyaal. Tracing its origins to Sadaarang, the legendary composer-musician who first adapted the Khyaal form from his own Dhrupad training in the Senia tradition, this style carries the gravity and philosophical depth of Dhrupad into the more expansive architecture of Khyaal — a rare marriage of austerity and beauty blended together seamlessly. What distinguishes it is an uncompromising fidelity to the Raaga itself: unfolding through pure tonal resonance, deep and unhurried elaboration, precise bol baants and decisive tihaais, and pattern-based taans and sapaar elaborations. To listen to Maihar Khyaal is to be drawn slowly and completely into the interior of a Raaga — to hear not just its notes, but its nature, its mood, its energy.

Naad Yoga Experience

Naad Yoga Experience is an immersive sound journey rooted in the ancient understanding that all of creation is Nada Brahma — divine sound made manifest. Just as a single drop creates rippling rings across still water, Anahata Nada — the primordial unstruck sound — ripples outward into all of existence, taking countless forms, including us. This practice invites us to become aware of our own frequency and, through sacred sound, to realign and co-create with Source. Gaayatri guides participants through three unfolding stages:

Nada Yoga & Mantra — awakening awareness of our own frequency through the sacred sounds of Sanskrit and the primordial resonance of Aum, where breath, sound, and consciousness become one

Raaga Meditation — a shared journey into deep listening and presence, guiding the mind into alpha and theta brain wave states where intuition awakens and we draw closer to Source

Bhajan & Kirtan — a communal celebration of Bhakti where every voice belongs, and together we express, invoke, and co-create with Source through the living power of music and devotion

Bhaktimala - A Joyful Experience of Devotional Music

Bhaktimala presents devotional music as a thrilling, uplifting experience. Few artists have the versatility to sing classical, light classical, regional, and devotional styles with real technical precision, and rarer still is the artist who sings them from the heart, leaving audiences transformed. GAAYATRI's programs blend her deep training in Raaga Sangeet with the joy of devotional Satsang, bringing upliftment and bliss to gatherings ranging from spiritual centers to yoga retreats and temples. She is well versed in light classical styles such as Thumri, Tappa, Ghazal, Dadra, and Dhun; regional styles such as Kajri, Chaiti, Rajasthani folk, Pahaadi folk, Avdhi, Abhang, Natya Sangeet, and Raas/Garba repertoire; and devotional styles such as Bhajan, Kirtan, Ashtapadi, and Haveli Sangeet, alongside a unique repertoire of Sant poetry by Mirabai, Kabir, Surdas, and Tulsidas set to Raagas in the signature Maihar devotional style, Sanskrit mantras, and Vedic chants. She also composes her own devotional songs, writing lyrics in Sanskrit and Braj Bhasha.
